Steel pipe weight calculator

Work out the weight of steel pipe per metre, per piece and per tonne. Enter the outside diameter and wall thickness for any dimension, seamless or welded.

Enter the outside diameter, wall thickness and length — the calculator gives the weight per metre, the weight per piece and how many metres make a tonne. It works for any dimension, in both the pipeline and the metric series.

The values are indicative, calculated from nominal dimensions. The actual weight of the delivered pipe varies within the tolerances of the standard. Contact us for a binding quotation.

The full weight table

The table for the pipeline series, 13.5 to 406.4 mm, sits on the Documents page — where it can also be downloaded as XLSX or PDF.

How it is calculated

Weight per metre follows from the cross-sectional area of the pipe and the density of steel: (D − t) × t × K, where D is the outside diameter in millimetres and t the wall thickness in millimetres.

(D − t) × t × 0.0247

The constant K derives from a steel density of 7850 kg/m³ (π × 7850 ÷ 10⁶ ≈ 0.02466). Our tables use the rounded value 0.0247; the difference is about 0.15% and shows only in the third digit at the smallest sizes. The table and the calculator use the same constant, so the two can never disagree.

Frequently asked

Why does the input ask for outside diameter rather than DN?
DN is a nominal size designation, not a measurement. DN50 has an outside diameter of 60.3 mm, DN80 has 88.9 mm. Entering 50 instead of 60.3 makes the result wrong by roughly 20%, which is why the calculator asks for the actual outside diameter in millimetres.
Why does the delivered pipe weigh something slightly different?
Standards allow the wall thickness and diameter to vary within tolerances — EN 10216 for seamless pipe, EN 10217 for welded. The table gives the nominal weight, calculated for exact dimensions. On thin walls the deviation is proportionally more noticeable.
Do these values apply to galvanized pipe?
The weight refers to the bare steel pipe, without the zinc coating. Galvanizing adds a small percentage to the total, so send an enquiry with the dimension and standard for an exact figure.
What does an empty cell mean?
That the combination of diameter and wall thickness is not in the series — it is uncommon and not held in stock. If you need exactly that one, send an enquiry: special dimensions are supplied to order, subject to a minimum quantity.
